Gambia Media Council’s Ethics Panel Members sworn-in

The Media Council of The Gambia has sworn-in two of the three members of the Ethics Panel of the Council at a low-key event held today -Thursday May 14 – at the GPU headquarters in Fajara.

Mr Madi Jobarteh, a civil society leader and Mr Salieu Taal, a prominent lawyer and president of The Gambia Bar Association took their oath of office while Mrs Amie Joof, a veteran media practitioner and gender rights activist will be sworn-in in the coming days.

The event was chaired by Mr. Nana Grey Johnson chairman of the MCG and dean of School of Journalism and Digital Media at the University of The Gambia.

Mr Junkung Jobarteh, a lawyer was also sworn-in as the Executive Secretary of the MCG. Until his appointment, Junkung is the head of legal affairs at the Public Utilities and Regulatory Authorities (PURA). He previously served as a magistrate and human rights activist.

Meanwhile, the MCG Chairman Nana Grey Johnson congratulated the ethics panel and thanked them for accepting to be part of the Council. He noted that the panel will serve as a moral pillar for those who need a voice. He also reminded the newly sworn in members that the nation and the people are depending on them.

Saikou Jammeh, GPU’s secretary general stated that this is a big achievement for The Gambia, noting that we are about to succeed in something many African countries are yet to achieve.

The Media Council was established by the GPU as an independent self-regulatory mechanism for addressing public complaints against the conduct of journalists.

The vote of thanks and closing remarks were delivered by Mr. Madi Jobarteh.
