Gambian activist and human rights defender Madi Jobarteh has today submitted a petition to the US Embassy in the Gambia regarding a planned protest against racism and police brutality against black Americans. Mr Jobarteh made this disclosure on his Facebook page and said the Gambia’s police boss IGP Mamour Jobe should be notified that they have decided to stage a protest in front of the US Embassy along Kairaba Avenue with or without a permit.
Below is the full text of Mr Jobarteh’s message.
“This afternoon we have submitted our petition ‘End Racism and Police Brutality against Blacks in America’ to the US Ambassador through the Regional Security Officer Ms. Becky McKnight at the gate of the embassy on Kairaba Avenue.
We informed her that we will go ahead with a protest as well. Therefore the IGP is hereby notified that we will set a date on which we will protest with or without permit! He has a choice to clampdown on the protest and arrest us.
The embassy has also offered a zoom conference with the Ambassador to follow up on the petition. We will discuss with the embassy staff so that we have good arrangements for that conference. I am of the view that the conference should be open for all Gambians to join online.
Black Lives Matter!”
