A special task force set-up to investigate the cause of a fire incident which occurred sometime in May this year, has on Tuesday submitted the report of its findings to the Area Council in Brikama, West Coast Region.
The task force, which comprised fire service officers, officials of the Area Council, Governor’s office and the market committee, was instituted by council to look into the cause of the fire outbreak at the Brikama market.
According to the task force, the fire got its source from an “unattended fire”.
Below are few recommendations from the task force.
- Evacuation of the affected fire victims from the current site as the place belongs to the Brikama health facility.
2. The ministry of health to fence the staff residence after evacuation to avoid future encroachment by market vendors
3. Provision of hydrants to be erected within the market vicinity to ease the work of the fire service in the event of emergencies.
4. Enhanced routine garbage collection so as to avoid people desperately resorting to burning of litres.
5. Proper installation of electrical fittings in the stalls with the market with supervision by NAWEC or any other identified and qualified electrician.
6. Creation of access route in the market to ease traffic flow in case of emergencies.
7. Frequent and regular inspection of the market by the established committee to ensure detection of any bad wirings or other congestion which may cause obstruction or posed threat to other users of the market.
