First Lady Barrow recycles plastic bags for home gardening

As a champion of Plastic Ban in West Africa, Her Excellency Fatoumatta Bah Barrow started an initiative that recycles used plastic bags for agriculture, after an inspiration during research online.

The environmentally friendly innovation saw the First Lady engaged in weeks of vegetable gardening using the plastic bags. Aside from keeping the streets from littering and the effects of burning plastics, the initiative could be used in homes where there is no space for gardening.

Now that her experiment yielded positive results with the harvest of the vegetables, the First Lady hopes to inspire others especially women that are into vegetable gardening and anyone interested in home gardening using the method.

The Minister of environment and the Women’s Affairs Minister both applauded the First Lady for the innovation and assured her that the method will be replicated across the country to promote recycling of plastic bags.

Environment Minister Hon. Lamin K. Dibba added the initiative will ensure plastic-free Gambia and could also be supplementary to fish money for women.
