The Gambia Transport Service Company (GTSC) has deployed over 60 buses across the country on Monday morning as commercial drivers begin a sit-down strike organised by their parent body, the Gambia National Transport Union (GNTU), Seedy Kanyie, General Manager of the GTSC confirmed.
Speaking to The Digest News, Mr. Kanyie said his company as a public service operator has positively responded to the demands of the commuters by deploying buses across the country.
He said: “We have deployed all the buses to the urban and rural areas. In total we have deployed over 60 buses and some buses have arrived from Basse this afternoon. They will be going back to the provinces tomorrow too. In addition to the mass deployment, we are also observing the social distancing rules as per the SoPE regulations.”
The GTSC boss also disclosed that the University of The Gambia has contacted his company weeks ago and requested for the provision of public transport to enable students sit for their exams at the UTG. The GTSC, stated, has responded positively by providing the UTG students with adequate transport without delay.
When asked about his opinion on the commercial drivers’ strike, Mr. Kanyie said their concerns are genuine and government should try and solve the situation.
