The Commander of the Gambia National Army, Colonel Ousman Gomez, on Wednesday, 27th August 2020 paid a courtesy call to the Honourable Minister of Defence, His Excellency Ambassador Sheikh Omar Faye. The purpose of the courtesy call was to meet with the Honourable Minister and staff of the Ministry in his new capacity as the Commander of the Gambia National Army, after successfully completing a 2 year Masters programme in Japan. It could be recalled that Colonel Ousman Gomez was appointed as Army Commander whilst in Japan pursuing a Master’s program
Speaking during the ceremony, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Ndey Marie Njie Badjie, who delivered the welcoming remarks, congratulated Colonel Ousman Gomez on his appointment, describing it as a well deserved one. She assured the newly appointed Commander of the Ministry’s continuous support and collaboration with the Gambia Armed Forces and by extension the Gambia National Army subsequently benefiting the entire nation at large. The Permanent Secretary further went on to reiterated on the significance of team work adding, it is the only way to ensure progressive and rapid results.
Colonel Ousman Gomez, seized the opportunity to thank His Excellency the President of the Republic of the Gambia and Commander –in-Chief of the Gambia Armed Forces, Mr Adama Barrow, the Ministry of Defence and the Chief of Defence Staff for appointing him as the Commander of the Gambia National Army, noting that the confidence entrusted to him is well recognized thus will be rightly reciprocated with hard work and commitment. He promised to work very hard to fulfilled the needs and aspirations of Gambians in line with his responsibilities
The Honourable Minister of Defence, Sheikh Omar Faye on his part congratulated Colonel Ousman Gomez on behalf of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Staff of the Ministry of Defence, on his appointment as the Commander of the Gambia National Army, as well for the successful completion of a 2 years Masters Programme in Japan. He went on to state his certainty in the capacities of Colonel Ousman Gomez, grounding it on his academic achievements and leadership qualities.
The Honourable Minister of Defence seized the opportunity to brief the newly appointed Commander on the on-going security sector reform agenda, centering on the first ever draft National Security Policy and its anticipated benefits. He expressed optimism on the on-going reform processes but was quick to point out the need to tighten belts and double up efforts to deliver as expected.
The Honourable Minister concluded by imploring the newly appointed Army Commander to work harder as a lot is expected from him as he is young, energetic and vibrant. In reiterating his trust and support for the newly appointed Commander, the Honourable Minister summed up by praying to the Almighty God for continuous guidance and protection at all times.
