Nine-year-old Aminata Nanko took part in an online Poetry and Painting competition organised by the United Nations (UN75) in collaboration with the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC) and the Writers Association of The Gambia (WAG), on 25th September 2020. She emerged 3rd position out of 101 participants in the Poetry category competition. The theme of the competition was: “The Gambia We Want To See in 2045.”
Aminata Nanko is a Grade Two student at First Foundation Academy (FFA) in Banjulinding Village, Kombo North District.
“For the Poetry category, about 101 participants took part and for the Painting Category, about 25 people took part. These were the two categories,” said Mr. Omar NK Ceesay, Aminata Nanko’s mentor, who also doubles as the president and founder of Heroes Poetry and Comedy, while speaking to The Digest News on Sunday.
Mr. Ceesay disclosed that at a colorful ceremony held at the Arch 22 in Banjul, Aminata Nanko was given a prize of D5,000 and a certificate.
He expressed delight at her performance and encouraged other students to concentrate and follow the footsteps of Aminata Nanko.
Aminata is the daughter of Mr. Kebba Nanko, the Propaganda Secretary of the Gambia’s PPP party in the USA.
