Tragedy occured on Saturday morning as the opposition Pastef party leader Ousman Sonko fainted during a prayer and recollection ceremony held in Bignona, a provincial town located 26 kilometers away from Ziguinchor in the Senegalese region of Casamance.
According to Senegalese media, Sonko had joined hundreds of people to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the nationwide demonstrations that took place in Senegal sometime in March this year.
The ceremony was organised by the Movement for Defence of Democracy (MDD) in memory of “13 young martyrs” of democracy.
After his speech, the leader of Pastef Ousman Sonko stood next to the opposition National Assembly Member Aida Mbodj and Cheikh Tidiane Dièye.
It was at this precise moment that he fell ill. According to those close to him, “it’s nothing serious, he fainted because the emotion linked to the event was too strong for him”.
In a separate video published on Seneweb some hours after he fainted, Ousman Sonko appeared to clarify that he is not sick he had a shock after looking at the photos of the victims of the strike, who lost their lives.
He thanked all those concerned about his welfare and those who were praying for him, while assuring everyone that he is doing fine and nothing is wrong with him.
Readers would recall that Ousman Sonko was arrested on 3rd March 2021 for disrupting public order, which prompted his supporters to stage a violent protest in the Senegalese capital Dakar. Sonko is also facing allegations of rape, which he denied and claimed was politically motivated.
As a result, violent protests erupted across the country, which led to the lost of lives of 13 youths.
