Malang Bah, who is alleged to have stolen items valued over D300,000, escaped from lawful custody on the 24th January, 2019. He has however been apprehended, brought to court and charged with the offence before Magistrate Thomasi of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court. He pleaded guilty. He was subsequently sentenced to one year imprisonment in hard labour.
Prosecutors alleged that while under police custody at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, he escaped from custody.
It was also alleged that on or about the 29th December, 2018, at Kairaba Avenue in the Kanifing Municipality of the Republic of The Gambia, the accused, Malang Bah, stole the following items from a motor vehicle with registration number BJL 9818G: one mobile phone mark Samsung grand premier valued at D6,000, one mobile phone mark Alkatel P1 X 4 valued at D7,000, one mobile phone mark Itel valued at D2,500, two gold watches valued at D138,000, one I-phone valued at D12,000, one gold chain valued at D15,000, one Guinea Conakry passport valued at D3,000, one Guinea Conakry ID card valued at D250, one Guinea Conakry driving license valued at D500, cash amounting to $355 equivalent to D17,750, cash amounting to 100 Euros equivalent to D5,700, cash amounting to 3,000 CFA equivalent to D240, cash amounting to D18,100, Bank of America ATM card valued at $20 equivalent to D1,140 and American social security card valued at $3,000 equivalent to D171,000, totaling D398,180, being the properties of one Hannah Sylla.
During the trial, Malang Bah however denied any wrongdoing. As a result, the prosecuting officer, Sergeant 3577 Kebbeh, called his first witness through whom the voluntary and cautionary statements of the accused and printouts from Africell and Qcell were tendered.
