The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), headed by Lawyer Emmanuel Joof, has today revealed that the two privately owned radio stations, King FM and Home Digital FM, will soon be reopen. This information was disclosed to journalists following a two -hour mediation talks between the Gambia Press Union and the Government, led by the NHRC.
The engagement, according to Lawyer Joof, was part of the commission’s broader mandate of advising and monitoring the government in order to cultivate and nurture a culture of human rights and rule of law.
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubacarr Baa Tambadou has also announced that the State has dropped the charges against the four journalists and will reopen their radio stations today.
The two radio stations, King FM and Home Digital FM were closed down on January 26 this year, during the second protest of the pressure group called Operation 3 Years Jotna, which was calling on President Adama Barrow to step down. Four journalists including the managers of the two radio stations, Gibbi Jallow of King FM and Pa Modou Bojang of Home Digital FM were arrested and detained for almost 72 hours before being released on bail.
