Lt. Aissatou Diedhiou, deputy spokesperson of the Gendarmerie Nationale of Senegal and Lt. Dioum, Spokesperson of the Police Nationale of Senegal have given updates about the Saturday shooting incident by Senegal’s security officers in the Gambian territory in Garawol Kuta village in the Kantora District of the Upper River Region.
The Senegalese Gendarmerie officers were said to have invaded and kidnapped one Sulayman Trawally, a native of Garawol Kuta village in the Kantora District of the Upper River Region, on Saturday, 7th March 2020.
Speaking to the Gambian journalist based in Germany via telephone, Lt. Aissatou Diedhiou, deputy spokesperson of the Gendarmerie Nationale of Senegal denied the Gendarmerie’s involvement in the said operation. She said: “It was the police because they are responsible for that. There is a drug agency under the national police, and they are responsible for such operation if it is drug related matters. I have not received any report of our Gendarmerie officers involved in such operation.”
When contacted to shed light on the operation, Lt. Dioum, head of Senegal’s Police Communications Unit, said via telephone that he does not have any information about the incident. He said it is the Gendarmerie who are responsible for security around the border villages. He also denied the police involvement, but promised to get clear information tomorrow and will share the information if he has the permission to do so.
“If it is the drug agency or the Gendarmerie, I will know latest tomorrow. I was in Rosso since in the morning and I just arrived home now,” he said on the telephone.
Rosso is a town in the Department of Dagana in the northern Senegal.
Meanwhile, the victim Sulayman Trawally, is said to have sustained injuries and is hopitalised in Tamba Counda, Senegal.
