Fight against Coronavirus: Senegal suspends all public gatherings, cancels independence celebration

The Government of Senegal has suspended all events and large public gatherings within the Senegalese territory. This decision emerged from the recommendations made during the Emergency Presidential Council meeting on Coronavirus convened by Head of State Macky Sall, on Saturday, 14th March at the Presidential Palace. Senegal’s leading online medium Seneweb reports.

The meeting was attended by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr, other members of the government and officials of the defense and security forces, as well as the members of the committee for the management of epidemics.

“I have decided to ban all public gatherings for 30 days,” President Sall said, adding that schools (from primary to university) have also be closed temporarily for three weeks, starting this Monday.

President Sall also demanded the strengthening of systematic health controls at the borders.

In addition, President Macky Sall said the Independence Day celebration is also cancelled. Instead of the traditional parade on 4 April, Macky Sall has announced that it will be done in a low-key ceremony at the presidential palace.
