Sergeant Lamin Sima, a Narcotics officer posted at the NDLEA Unit at New Yundum Station has been arrested since Monday night by officers of the Anti-Crime Unit (ACU) of the Gambia Police Force. He is suspected of drug trafficking and is currently detained at the ACU in Bijilo.
“He was caught with four (4) bags of Cannabis in Penyem Village in the West Coast Region,” a source told The Digest News.
When contacted to shed light on the arrest and detention of Lamin Sima, the Public Relations Officer of NDLEA, Ousman Saidy Bah confirmed reports of his arrest. He said the accused officer is yet to be handed over as investigations are ongoing.
According to PRO Saidy Bah, the NDLEA will not entertain any misconduct and will deal with anyone who is into drug dealing if found guilty. He said once the accused is handed over, the NDLEA will investigate and take necessary action according to law. He also encourages the general public to cooperate with NDLEA and other security services and give reports of any suspected drug case.
Further investigations made by The Digest News also revealed that the suspect Lamin Sima was earlier arrested towards the end of January, following the arrest of one Sanna Jarjue, who was suspected of drug dealing. Jarjue told the investigators that Lamin Sima used to transport the drugs he receives from the Gambian border villages near Cassamance.
Lamin Sima was then arrested and taken to the NDLEA investigations unit called CTI in Bijilo. During the investigations, the Professional Standards Disciplinary Committee (PSDC) of the NDEA recommended for the suspect Lamin Sima to be given a warning letter and be demoted from Chief Inspector to Sergeant for misconduct.
In late January, an alleged drug dealer called Sanna Jarjue from Brikama Darru Haiyyrou who was arrested by the NDLEA officers told investigators at the country’s drug agency allegedly disclosed that he used to pay Lamin Sima to transport cannabis for him from the border village when his agents in Cassamance smuggles the cannabis into the country.
“During the said investigation when Lamin Sima was taken to the CTI in Bijilo, Sanna Jarjue told investigators that he has been given money to the NDLEA Commissioner for West Coast Region, Mawlud Faal through his (Sanna’s) brother. He revealed that he has given Faal almost D85,000 by installments. Sanna told the investigators that he has been giving money to Lamin Sima, Mawlud Faal and Ansumana Marong, a private NDLEA officer. This information was also confirmed by Sanna Jarjue’s brother, Lamin Sima and Ansumana Marong,” a source said.
Meanwhile, the suspected dealer Sanna Jarjue has been granted bail as investigations are still ongoing.
