COVID-19: 3 Immigration officers, 2 others allegedly kept in an isolation center in Banjul

Three female Immigration officers and two civilians (names withheld) are allegedly kept in a Warehouse called ‘Wencho’, used as an isolation center in the country’s capital Banjul, reports reaching The Digest News revealed.

An investigation made by Gambian journalist Adama Makasuba further revealed that the said individuals were alleged arrested and taken back to the isolation center, following their earlier release upon completion of the recommended two weeks deadline for all persons undergoing quarantine by the health authorities.

Reports suggested that the five persons were arrested and taken back to the isolation center. They are currently kept at Wencho in Banjul.

According to reports, the said individuals complained of not being attended to by a single medical officer, but they are only kept in isolation. The three officers were among a group of Gambian security officers (Immigration, army and police) who were sent on a training mission to Abu Dhabi, Dubai.

The entire team was quarantined upon arrival in March for 14 days and got released on April 3, but the three female officers and two civilians got arrested and taken into isolation for the second time on April 11.

“Upon arrival at the airport on 20th March 2020, they were quarantined for 14 days and released to go home on 3rd April 2020. On Saturday, 11th April 2020 these officers were arrested by Captain Corr and a health officer called Bahoum,” a source who wished to remain anonymous told this reporter.

When contacted to shed light on this issue, Modou Njie, the director of Health Promotion at the Ministry of Health, said he is not aware of this case. He however promised to find out and clarify the issue with the press.

In a similar development, ASI Mamanding S. Dibba, the spokesperson of the Gambia Immigration Department, said he is not aware of the issue.
