The Kanifing Municipality has on Tuesday launched a ‘10,000 household food aid’ program for the people of the municipality during the period of the State of Public Emergency following the coronavirus outbreak.
The launching ceremony, held in Kanifing, is meant to support the self-employed/ under-employed population who are required to stay at home in line with social-distancing guidelines.
“We are targeting 10,000 vulnerable households (25% of KM Households) by giving bags of rice to each as support while they stay at home. Our Councillors with their Ward Development Committees and Community development officers under the supervision of the KMC Covid 19 task force will ensure that these bags make it to the right recipients,” Talib Bensouda, mayor of Kanifing Municipality wrote on his Facebook page.
In an effort to realize this goal, he said the KMC has cut D1,000,000 from its travel budget (33% of travel budget) under the leadership of the Finance Committee and have received over D1,000,000 from very generous donors both businesses and individuals. Mayor Bensouda thanked the businesspeople for their generosity.
“So far we have started the distribution of over 3000 bags and looking forward to donors to reach our target of 10,000,” he concludes. Deputy mayor Musa Bah represented the Mayor Bensouda at the launching ceremony.
