A group of young people from the Sami District have decided to mobilize funds to support the district which is regarded as one of the most neglected districts in The Gambia in terms of support and development. The living condition of the people in the district is poor and governments (both past and present) have not done much for the people in this area.
Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the District is vulnerable and lack basic sanitary items, as well as food and other basic necessities, thus the reason for this campaign to support the people of Sami.
Below we reproduce a copy of the appeal from the support group.
Statistics have shown that, Sami District in Central River Region has the highest number of underprivileged and vulnerable families. The daily struggles of inhabitants of this area is as a result of poverty and lack of access to certain basic necessities.
Their main source of earning is usually subsistence Agriculture.
Since the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus and its subsequent spread in The Gambia, the government has put in measures to contain the pandemic. one of which is the declaration of a State of Public Emergency. This declaration has forced many people to stay home against their will.
Unfortunately, many of the rural dwellers live from hand to mouth and the government has not provided a stimulus package that meets the dire needs of the vulnerable and weak in the communities. The civil society organisations and other philanthropists who have been giving food aid to vulnerable families have mostly, if not all, neglected the rural Gambia.
It is against this backdrop that we call for you to donate either in cash or kind so as to provide minimal food packages and other relevant items to the people of Sami District.
