A member of the State Guard Battalion, Lance Corporal Nuha Conteh was on Monday morning arrested by Military Police at the State Guards Unit (his unit) when he reported to work at the State House in Banjul.
The said soldier was identified as the soldier who opened fire last week at the Kalagi Police Station’s Charge Office while being interrogated by officers of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency of The Gambia (DLEAG) for alleged being in possession of bundles of suspected drugs (cannabis).
The suspect was stopped by officers of the DLEAG and the Gambia Police Force while he was in a commercial vehicle with registration number BJL 1890 S. He was taken to the Station for interrogation, where he pulled out a pistol and opened fire on the ceiling and ran away.
Since then, the drug law enforcement officers have been a on a serious manhunt for him until this morning when he was arrested by the military.
Confirming the story for The Digest News, Major Lamin K. Sanyang, spokesperson of the Gambia Armed Forces, said he was arrested this morning and taken to the Military Police office in Yundum Barracks. He added that the suspect will be transferred to the Fajara Barracks where he will be detained while investigations are ongoing.
“Since the incident happened, the DLEAG wrote to us officially to inform us about it and we also investigated the matter and realized that it was the suspect who opened fire at Kalagi Station,” he stated.
The GAF spokesperson also identified the suspect to be a member of the Intake 30 of the Gambia Armed Forces, adding that GAF has zero tolerance for drug use and abuse by its members.
The DLEAG Spokesperson Ousman Saidybah could not be reached for comments but The Digest News will further investigate the matter in due course.
