President Adama Barrow today received at the Statehouse four fomer Presidents, H.E Gen. Olusegun of Nigeria, H.E Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone, H.E Ngalema Motlane of South Africa and H.E GoodLuck Jonathan of Nigeria, as heads of Commonwealth, ECOWAS, AU and, WAEF Election Observer Missions, respectively. The President also received Mr Norbert Neuser, EU Chief Observer.
Head of Commonwealth Observer Mission H.E Obasanjo told the press after a closed-door meeting with President Barrow that the Barrow administration is the one that brought The Gambia back into the Commonwealth, adding that elections are an important aspect of democracy that is not a destination but a journey. He noted that what he has seen on the ground so far reflects the degree of preparation for transparent and peaceful elections.
According to H.E Koroma, the ECOWAS head of mission, the regional body was involved in the country’s transition period even before the elections. He explained that the team is in the country to assess the space provided to Gambians in terms of peace, security, and other aspects, as well as to ensure that democratic credentials are strengthened and peace is maintained.
All of the observers expressed their excitement for an election in which the people’s will is respected.
