Two councillors from Marakissa and Sanyang wards under the jurisdiction of Brikama Area council were on Monday sworn in at a ceremony held at the council’s office in Brikama in the West coast region.
In an interview, Honourable Boto Bojang of Sanyang ward praised Allah and expressed gratitude towards his family, party members and electorates for electing him as their new ward councillor. “I was delighted for being declared as the winner in Sanyang ward,” he said.
He pointed out that his mission was to serve the ward, despite his allegiance to the UDP which paved the way for him to grab the seat.
“I have already set up my ward committees since I was declared the winner by the independent electoral commission (IEC), and I am going on a ward tour to identify the problems of my people, and those problems will be prioritised,” he said, adding that he will be the voice of his people in the council and the entire west Coast as a Region.
Counsellor Bojang mentioned that there are many challenges that the BAC is facing most especially in terms of waste management and economic losses. “Since my declaration as the councillor of Sanyang ward I have started a weekly cleansing exercise with my committee weeks ago,” he added.
Honourable Seedy Nyassi the newly elected councillor for Marakissa ward under NPP ticket, speaking to The Digest News Reporter said “I am proud of my people (electorates) for the trust they bestowed on me and I am going to serve them with honesty and dedication. There is no balance in this because if I want to be balanced I will be bias,” said honourable Nyassi.
“In campaign period I appeared as a party figure the day I was declare as a winner by the independent electoral commission (IEC) I am no more a party figure but a figure that is representing Marakissa ward, Brikama south and the entire West Coast Region at large”.
“My first priority in serving my people is survival and that’s Agriculture, because products or food cultivated in the Gambia are sold at a very high price. Notwithstanding Education too but I will still prioritised agriculture and make sure I uplift the economic status of my people and most especially the women.”
“I urged all the journalists to be visiting the council to know more about the functions of the councillors, much appreciation to my people.” He concluded.
For his part the chairman of Brikama Area Council Mr Sheriff Sonko said he has no doubt that there is a great potential to make the Region more advanced, “I urged that elected officials to set aside political consideration and execute their constitutional duties to address pressing issues affecting us as people that will require a deliberate effort, individually and collectively, on the part of each and everyone of us.”
Chairman Sonko went to advise the counsellors not underestimate the scale of the challenges ahead because the way out is long and requires a sustained commitment.
“Let’s endeavour to foster social cohesion, inclusive environment that will stimulate to tolerate and bring out the best in all members for the greater good for our mighty West Coast Region,” he concludes.
The ceremony was attended by Governor West Coast Region, the regional SIS officer, representative of IEC, Councilors, staff and people from both wards.
