Building The New Gambia: Public Scrutiny Of Candidates

By Madi Jobarteh

Nomination of mayoral and chairperson candidates for the local government elections on May 12 ends today. Next, the IEC will display the nomination papers of all candidates at the various regional offices from Banjul to Basse for public scrutiny.

The aim of the public scrutiny is to allow the general public to vet each and every candidate to ensure that only legitimate persons are nominated.

Therefore this is the turn of the people to validate or invalidate any candidate based on what you know about them.

If you know that a particular candidate was once convicted for any crime or involved in any activity that violates the electoral laws, you must report to the IEC so that such a candidate is disqualified.

Let us not allow illegitimate persons to vie for public office. Our democracy and politics will not be clean and fair so long as unscrupulous candidates and politicians are involved.

The ball is now in the court of the general public to ensure that each and every candidate is a legal and legitimate person to contest!

Visit your regional IEC Office tomorrow from 8am to 12 noon to vet.
