The Gambia Police Force’s Chief of Operations Brikama Division, West Coast Region (WCR) Commissioner Muhammed Kanteh has been charged with two counts of abuse of office, one count of false information and one count of communicating with the press without clearance, contrary to the Laws of the Gambia.
This information, according to The Point newspaper, was disclosed by the Government spokesperson Ebrima G. Sankareh.
Sankareh said Police Commissioner Kanteh is now receiving house salary pending the outcome of his trial. He added that the accused person (Kanteh) was awaiting disciplinary measures and trial, but he is now on interdiction. He also informed this paper that Kanteh’s file is now before the Attorney General’s Chambers for legal advice.
Kanteh was arrested on 26th January 2020 during the protest of the 3 Years Jotna movement that turned out to be violent and granted bail within 72 hours as required by law.
Kanteh was seen in a video that went viral on social media on the day of the second protest of the 3 Years Jotna movement, where he was speaking to the journalists who were at the Serrekunda Hospital in Kanifing. He claimed that he left over 100 men who were under his command in Brikama to visit two of his brothers at the SK Hospital, who were allegedly stabbed during the protest.
He added: “I am not treated fairly and the president himself will know that Kanteh is not treated fairly because when Jammeh refused to step down, I took President Barrow from his house to my brother’s house, where he slept.”
