The US Embassy in Banjul has disclosed its readiness to working with 2018 Mandela Washington Fellow Mariam Barry (female police officer), to implementing the Community Policing and Awareness Raising to Strengthen Laws against Female Genital Mutilation Project. The project, according to the US Embassy, will engage communities throughout The Gambia to promoting human rights and combating gender-based violence.
February 6 marks the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation, an internationally recognized day to foster awareness of the devastating effects of FGM/C and renew the call for the abandonment of this harmful traditional practice.
In a similar development, the UK Banjul Embassy is also supporting the fight to stop FGM.
As part of activities marking this day, the UK Embassy in The Gambia, featured activist Fatou Baldeh MBE, who calls for The Gambian youths to unleash their power to end FGM and put a stop to the violation of rights of women and girls.
