Leaders of ECOWAS hold Extraordinary Summit via Videoconferencing to combat COVID-19 in the Region

Abuja, April 22, 2020

The Conference of Heads of State and Government of the ECOWAS will hold an extraordinary session by video conference, tomorrow, April 2020, 23, with the beginning of 10:00 pm, universal time.

The Heads of State will address the situation and the impact of the pandemic (COVID-19) in the ECOWAS region. Previous to this extraordinary summit, the Finance Ministers and the Governors of the Central Banks of the Region held an Extraordinary Session on April 21, 2020 on the situation of COVID-19.

In order to deal with the situation of COVID-19 in the region, ECOWAS immediately provided financial support, in addition to the assistance received from international partners, for the acquisition of material and medical equipment for the fight against the pandemic.

On 20 April 2020, according to the data from the West African Health Organization (OAS), the 15 Member States recorded 5.474 confirmed cases, 1.567 recovered, 140 deaths and 3.767 active cases.
ECOWAS reaffirms its solidarity with the Member States and welcomes all the measures already taken to contain the spread of the pandemic and care of the patients.
