Poetry Corner: People Wear Paper Masks

The author, Aisha Jarjue

They’re invisible to the naked eye but I can assure you that they’re there.
These paper masks hide the truth.
The truth about these paper feelings.
The paper feelings are delicate.
They can slip when you least expect it.
So they make sure their paper masks are on tight
And wait until day turns to night.

People wear paper masks.
To hide their negative emotions like sadness,
anger,
guilt
and loneliness.
They can try to display other emotions.
They can try to act confident like that girl next door.
They can try to be bold and overjoyed.
But at the end of the day when their paper masks come off,
Their paper feelings come back as well.
So they make sure their paper masks are on tight
And hope that someday they’ll see a new light.

People wear paper masks.
People tell lies.
People act fine
When they’re breaking inside.
People act happy
When they’re at their worst.
People might even act confident
When for all we know they could be cursed.
So they make sure their paper masks are on tight.
And prepare to put up with another fight.

They lock up their emotions and throw away the key.
In a huge crowd of people
The only thing I see
Is a bunch of paper people who are lying to me.

Coming For You

Don’t worry…I’m coming for you…
I promise to find you.
Everyday as the sun awakens me with its sweet kisses,
I give a little yawn, and continue my search for you.
Whether the sun shines radiantly, the moon hides behind the fluffy clouds or even if the sky throws a tantrum,
I promise that I’ll find you.
If I’m lonely or joined by a talkative crowd,
I can still feel your presence, waiting patiently.

Are you looking for me too?
The cliff may crumble and the sky may fall
But my love for you stands above all.
Wait- I see a blinding light. I can hear it calling for me. I wander towards it, hope in the air.

At last, it appears that I have found you…

Mirage

They say that there’s nothing more hypnotising than a whale’s morning song,
Nothing sweeter than a baby’s first cry.
They also say that there’s nothing cuter than a new born puppy licking your face playfully
And nothing more beautiful than the starts littering the night sky.
But these things are all lies. How do I know? Why, simply because…
You’re standing right in front of me.

I’m waiting for you!

Help me! Get me out of here!
I don’t want to be here
In this crowd of mismatch people.
Why me?
I haven’t been naughty!
Or have I?
The big kids are here now…
Oh dear!
They want my teddy!
They’ve snatched it from me!
I’m waiting for you!
Save me from this nightmare!
I want my teddy bear!
I am howling like a new-born baby.
The kids are mocking me. As the hall empties, I’m all alone.. Its supper time now.. I’m ravenous. Help Me! Help me! I am waiting for you.
