The Honourable Minister of Interior, Mr. Yankuba J.N. Sonko on Friday, 25th June 2021 made a televised statement on the eve of the day set aside for the commemoration of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking conventionally called ‘World Drug Day’. The day is observed on the 26th of June annually to raise awareness on the dangers of drug abuse.
Minister Sonko affirmed that 26th of June was set out the by Resolution 42/112 of December 1987 of the United Nations General Assembly as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking (World Drug Day). He explained that the day reflects on the dangers associated with drug-related vices and to forge curbing mechanisms through collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure a world-free drug abuse. He further noted that anti-narcotic agencies, civil society organisations and individuals all over the world continue to embark on awareness creation against those dangers of drug abuse in our societies and by extension its socioeconomic ramifications on countries.
“The day is marked to advocate actions and strengthen cooperation in achieving the goals of a world-free drug abuse. The aim is to mobilize public support in the fight against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking. Awareness raising programmes are thus the means undertaken by anti-narcotic agencies, civil society organizations and individuals all over the globe to curb major problems that illicit drugs present to societies, and remind people of the negative effects of drugs on nations,’’ he stated.
