Ousman Touray: Africa’s visionary young man!

by Basidia M. Drammeh.

The Gambia and Africa, at large, have discovered a hidden precious gem in the person of Ousman Touray, who propelled to international fame in recent times following the spread of a video of him articulating his vision about Africa and the youth of the Continent.

Touray, a talented, inspirational and gifted young man came to international fame after a fellow Pan-Africanist, Juliet Rayan, interviewed him recently and posted the video on YouTube. The video went viral and was watched by millions of viewers.

I was dying to have a direct conversation with the visionary young Gambian man. Incidentally I discovered that he’s already friends with me on Facebook so I decided to reach out to him. Thankfully, we touched base.

I have been particularly keen to reach him to, first and foremost, congratulate him on his brilliant ideas, particularly on education and his vision as to how to pull Africa out of the current miss. Touray, an articulate and eloquent Pan-Africanist believes that our education is not designed to fit the purpose, hence he is calling for the transformation of our curricula.

To accentuate his vision he opted to complete his studies in Rwanda, a country he considers as a perfect model for Africa’s renaissance and development, even though he was offered to pursue his studies in US, UK and Canada, which are highly reputable for delivering quality education.

Ousman Touray Is a Young Pan-Africanist from The Gambia who started his schooling career back in 2003 in Kiang East. He moved to The Kombos in 2013 to to do his high school level. Upon completion in 2016, he decided to start his undergraduate degree in UTG with a major in Development Studies.

When I asked him about his vision, this is exactly what he said:
“ Basically, as a young Pan-African my vision is deeply shape by the pioneers of the movement. That this continent belongs to us and particular the youths. We have to get rid of the disconnection and design the future we want as a People. The borders don’t matter, it’s the nationhood that can take us to to where we belong. The beginning to all these is understanding ourselves our past and the future we want.”

It saddens me that an outsider was able to bring out of closet a precious gem in Ousman’s caliber which tells a lot about as Gambians.

Touray is a divine gift for the Gambia and should be jealously guarded and protected. He will be something tomorrow. May Allah continue to bless and protect him.

  1. It saddens me that you missed the point. Juliet Ryan is not an outsider, she is an African, just stolen from the motherland.
