Gambia’s football legend Biri Biri dies at 72

The Gambia’s former football legend Alhagie Momodou Njie widely known as Biri Biri has passed away on Sunday morning in Dakar, Senegal, where he was receiving treatment following a brief illness.

The late Biri Biri is the son of the late Sainabou Mboge and Alhagie Modou Njie and was born on 30th March, 1948 in Banjul.

Widely known by his sobriquet Biri. Mr. Njie was a footballer who played as a right winger for the senior national team, the Scorpions of The Gambia in the late 90s.

He was a top-notch player for Sevilla FC in Spain and Herfolge Boldklub in Denmark. He was the first Gambian International footballer and was regarded by many as the best Gambian fast forward players of all time.

Educational Background

Alhagie Momodou Biri Njie went to school at St. Augustine’s High School in Banjul and proceeded with his professional career as an International player.

A veteran sports journalist Pap Saine, Co-founder of The Point Newspaper who have good memories of the former International player’s story as a leader in the pitch, said: “It’s a sad day for The Gambia and the entire world.”

He described Biri as a great man who spent his own money just to come and play for The Gambia. “He would do this without asking for any refund from anybody.”

Mr. Saine described Biri Njie as one of Africa’s greatest players, adding that he was a truthful man who has understanding and knew what he was doing very well.

For his part, Kebba Masanneh Ceesay, said Gambians owe Biri Njie a lot, stating that he was that player maker who sacrificed his money, energy and time just to raise the Gambian flag to the highest.
